  • Preparation step to becoming a contagious Christian:
Discern which style fits you best. Is your style most like Peter (direct), Paul (intellectual), the healed blind man (testimonial), Matthew (interpersonal), the woman at the well (invitational), or Tabitha (serving style).
  • Step to becoming a contagious Christian:
Use one or more of the simple tools of bridging, questioning, inviting or dropping hints in the relationships you encounter this week.
  • Remember two of our church’s priorities for 2010? To reach out and build relationships, and to grow in our ability to invite and welcome.
  • The contagious congregation
    will have members who are:
    • dropping hints that they are spiritually-minded
    and church-going persons,
    • turning regular conversations to spiritual ones,
    • asking people questions that open spiritual
    conversations,
    • inviting people to spiritually oriented events.
To the wonderful calling of being salt, and light, and leaven— which we already do well here at Alexanderwohl—let us add the dimension of naturally and easily conversing about the difference faith makes in our life.

FOCUS FOR THE WEEK

Focus Statement: Are you needing to finish a project at work or home, but keep getting interference and distractions? Have you ever run into resistance as you try to accomplish some good thing? You’ve come to the right place! A guy named Nehemiah is going to show us how to get the work done, in spite of trouble and distractions.

Welcome: Welcome, each and everyone! Are you ready for a fun and meaningful day? How good it is that you have come to worship the Lord this morning. And the surprising thing is, as we give our praise and thanks to God, we end up receiving more than we give! May you draw close to the Lord in worship today.

Dedication Prayer
Loving God, You have given us so much – life and breath, sun and rain, food and shelter. We thank you for these and everything else that would take all day to mention. We bring you these offerings as a sign of our gratitude. Use them to keep on giving gifts to others. For Jesus’ sake, Amen.

Sunday School Classes for Adults
All adults are invited to Sunday School! A variety of choices are available. If you have not been attending any Sunday School class or have been attending one class for a long time and want a change— consider attending one.

Sunday School Classes for Children
All children ages 3 and up are invited to Sunday School!

Sunday School Class for College Students – Beginning today there will be a new Sunday School class for college students. It will meet in the upstairs room in the southwest corner of the building (above the church office) at 9:30-10:20. You may come in through the church office entrance. Our new college/young adult sponsors are James and Gayle Voth. Either James and Gayle or Pastor Linda will be there to greet you for a time of sharing, prayer, and fellowship. Friends are welcome!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Meet our Candidate for Youth Pastor – Hope Graber. Most of you can meet her during a combined Sunday School hour on Sept. 5. The youth can meet with her Saturday, Sept. 4, at 10:30 am, to be followed by a lunch for the youth and their parents. Elementary Sunday School teachers, college age youth, and anyone else not able to attend the combined Sunday School hour on the 5th are also invited at noon for this meal but we would appreciate an RSVP to the church office. ~The Search Committee

The new Sunday School year begins next week, Sept. 5. Thank you to everyone who agreed to teach in the Elementary Department Sunday School classes for the next year. Only one more teacher is needed for one Sunday a month, for the 3 & 4 year olds. If you have any interest in filling this position, please come and see me, call or e-mail. Would love to hear from you!
~Janine Peters, 367-8256; petersjd@mtelco.net

Mennonite College Student Members: If you are enrolled at a Mennonite College, are a full-time undergraduate student, and a member of Alexanderwohl, you are eligible to apply for a Church Scholarship for this school year. Scholarship applications are in the church office or may be received from Carol Reimer Duerksen, MCSMT Treasurer, via email. All applications are due August 31, 2010.

September 15-17 is our next Volunteer Opportunity at Harvey County Homeless Shelter. There are sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in the south lobby. Please consider volunteering for this mission.

All crafters and your friends are invited to Craftn’ Night, Sept. 18, 6-9 pm in the church fellowship hall. Hosted by Daughters of Grace. Any questions, contact Janice Voth at 367-8152 or mobilair@mtelco.net.

Attention Alexanderwohlers who ride in the MCC Flatlander Bicycle Ride. Brochures for this year’s ride on Sept. 18 are now in the church office. One is also on the bulletin board. Funds raised by this year’s ride will go to the MCC water development project in Nigeria.

We are becoming contagious! To encourage us and keep us moving in the “contagious congregation direction” I would like to make some examples available. Please let Pastor Steve know of any experiences you have had of turning an ordinary conversation into a spiritual one, or an example of when you initiated a spiritual conversation with a question or invitation. (These would only be shared anonymously.) E-mails welcome! alexsteve@mtelco.net.

The Library Committee welcomes suggestions for book purchases, whether titles, authors, or topics. Leave a note in the return basket or tell a committee member. Members are Rosalie Duerksen, June Hiebert, Tammy Flaming, Edna Reimer; Joyce Bergen and Jeanette Roberts, Co-Chairs.

Budget and Debt Counseling: Lutheran Social Services Financial Counseling (LSSFC) (in partnership with Mennonite Mutual Aid [MMA]) offers confidential, non-judgmental financial counseling to anyone in the community that faces financial struggle, or would like to know a little more about financial wellness. At no cost, LSSFC will take a comprehensive look at a person’s budget, debts, and income and then provide personalized recommendations and options to help individuals and families move toward their financial goals. Call 877-809-0039 for more information. For Spanish language counselors call 800-388-2227.

A date you may want to consider putting on your calendar is October 29-31. That is the next Anabaptist Vision and Discipleship Series at Hesston College. The topic of how Christians—all of us—favor one aspect or dimension of Jesus over other dimensions—to the extent that we misunderstand Jesus. We start to follow a “Jesus” of our own making instead of allowing Jesus to shape us into more of his likeness. How can we better see and embrace all of Jesus? And what would happen to our congregations—and us—if we started doing just that? Several of us attended last year’s Series, and were very blessed. This year’s series, called “3-D Jesus,” looks very inspirational and challenging. See the bulletin board for details.

Make plans to be part of the fun at our Church Retreat Sept. 25 & 26 at Camp Mennoscah. It is an uplifting and church-building time. Monetary donations will be collected during a special "Fun Drive" offering during worship today and Sept. 5 (please make checks payable to Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church with “Church Retreat” in the memo).

On the bulletin boards:
- Posted are many exciting events from our Colleges and Community.

A resolution that is a potential declaration of war against Iran has been introduced in the House of Representatives. Please urge Jerry Moran to oppose House Resolution 1553.

SEPT.10-12, WOMEN AND GIRL’S RETREAT
For all women and girls in third grade and up. Remember the deadline for registering for Women and Girl’s retreat at Camp Mennoscah on Sept. 10-12 is Aug. 30. Florence Schloneger will speak and her topics include “Recovering the unique person God created you” and “Uncovering the uniqueness of those persons with whom you live and work”. Also Saturday morning we have two session at10:00. One on stamping for the first 30 women who sign up for it. The other is quilting and tying a quilt for the MCC Sale. Sondra Tolle and Colleen Westerman will spend time discussing possibilities for getting your quilts completed. So remember to bring them along. Colleen will have her embroidery machine up and running to personalize and embroider kitchen towels, golf towels, sports towels, scarves, pillowcases, and any other items you bring along to have personalized. We'll also have items for sale. Please bring your own lunch. ~ The Retreat Committee

The Annual Goessel Area CROP Walk is being planned for Sunday, October 3 at 1:30 p.m. We will begin the walk at Tabor Mennonite Church in a 2 mile mini-walk or 6 mile crop walk. People in many countries walk that distance simply to obtain water or firewood. Walkers are invited to bring an item for the Tabor Food Pantry on the day of the walk. There will be a drop off box at Tabor Church when you begin walking. This year we will provide free t-shirts to all walkers. Get your envelope early and fill out the form on your walker envelope for your t-shirt size. We still need more businesses to sponsor the t-shirts. Call Denise Nickel, 367-2226.
Be a Walker! Ask a friend, family member, mentor or mentee to walk with you. Groups, such as Junior High, Youth Groups or Sunday Schools are encouraged to challenge each other to walk. It's good exercise and a great activity to help those in need! Let's see if we can match last year's amount of $8808.00 (63 walkers), or better yet, increase the number of walkers and donations this year! Let's "End Hunger One Step at a Time." If you want your CROP Walk donation to go to MCC, please write the check to MCC. Sign up and get your CROP Walk collection envelope from our church CROP Walk Recruiters, Kent Peters and Evan Esau.

It’s time for MCC School Kits! The MCC warehouses are extremely low on school kits and MCC has already received requests for over 40,000 school kits from partner organizations around the world. The next time you’re out running errands, pick up the supplies for an MCC School Kit! The complete list and instructions for making a school kit bag can be found at www.mcc.org/kits/school. Kits should be taken to your nearest MCC drop-off location or the MCC Center in North Newton, KS. Please call us with questions at 316-283-2720.
